When things get heavy

As I prepared for last Sunday’s message (January 15, 2023) I thought back on all the times I have realized I was carrying too much weight and became determined to do something about it. (Not doing much was part of the problem.)

I would estimate that over my lifetime, I have worked at losing 275-300 pounds in total.  The problem is that right now, I have gained about 320, leaving me with 20 more than I (and the doctor) would like me to carry.  As I thought about this, I began to think of all the times I have “cast off” Hebrews 12:1-2 spiritual weight, but then returned later to pick it back up.

Consistently weighing yourself (whether every day or every couple days) reminds you that your recent actions do have a quick impact.  I think the same is true when you immerse yourself daily in God’s Word, as the written Word and the Holy Spirit John 16:13-14 direct you — and at times convict you — before you have to “let another notch out on the belt.”  Here’s to getting to and maintaining a healthy weight physically, and doing the same spiritually as we “cast off” what is not pleasing to God.

Pressing on,

Ron Tipton, Senior Pastor
