The power of prayer

Yesterday we looked at the Model Prayer, commonly called the Lord’s Prayer.  There is nothing wrong in praying these very words.  I would, however, caution anyone from allowing the repetition of words to make us so familiar with them that the words roll off our tongues but fail to impact our hearts and minds. There are many things we can do in the Christian life that have great meaning, but when they move in the ritualization of the action or words, they are mere sentiments rather than acts of praise.

The Model Prayer is a framework to help us then hang our words of prayer and praise to God in a manner that is acceptable and pleasing to the Father.  I once attended a conference where the speaker encouraged us to slow down in our reading of Scripture so that each and every word rolled around our minds and heart doing the work it was inspired by the Holy Spirit to do.  I encourage you to do the same with the Model Prayer as well as all your reading of God’s Word.  Every word was inspired for your edification and movement into a deeper love and walk with the Lord.

Years ago I recommended a little book to the church, Praying the Bible by Don Whitney.  Many of you read it.  Maybe it is time to re-read it and put it into practice.  Prayer is often thought of as simply and only bringing before the Lord our needs and requests.  Yet, prayer, as time we spend with anyone, is meant to change us; to draw us closer; to build the relationship.  And I don’t know about you, but I sure need changing more and more into the image of Christ. Daniel Henderson is another who I follow and read about the practice of prayer.  Here is a link to a recent article I call to your attention – https://www.strategicrenewal.com/prayer-that-changes-us/ I want us to become a church that prays together.  Will you join me?

Pressing on…
