Not seeing is believing

Did you watch the eclipse yesterday? Do you step out and check out the moon from time to time? As the moon covered the sun yesterday, and you could only see part of it; was all the sun still there even though you couldn’t see it? What about the moon at night as it goes through its phases throughout the month? Is all the moon still there? I imagine you are thinking, silly pastor, yes; all the sun was still there, just momentarily covered up. And yes, all the moon is still there; I just cannot see part of it at certain times.

So the reality of these two celestial bodies remains the same even when we cannot observe them, right? I want you to apply truth and reality to the goodness of God. Even when we are unable to observe the goodness of God in our life at a certain moment, the reality is that all of God’s goodness is still there. It hasn’t diminished. Our ability to see and recognize it is what is off. Romans 8:31-38 tells us of God’s overwhelming and never-ending goodness for His children. This section of verses ends with, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present not things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” And the start of Paul’s prayer in Colossians 1:3 begins simply with, “We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” as he expounds on the salvation from God and the results in their lives.

If I live in the reality that the goodness of God is always the same – whether I can observe it or not – then I have boldness and courage to live my life in surrender to Him and for His glory always. So the next time you look at the moon, be reminded that God’s goodness is always there and never failing. And let it encourage your faithfulness to the Lord.

Pressing on…

Ron Tipton, Senior Pastor
