Heroes among us

Many times we talk about heroes — great men and women, giants of the faith.  And yes, there are those that stand out due to their faith in the midst of the circumstances of life, the places they were called to minister, or the hardships they faced.  Hebrews 11 is commonly called the Hall of Faith.  Verses 1-2 give us the springboard into the matter: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.  For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.”

Then for the Jewish believer is a list of those whose stories they would know well:  Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses’ parents, Moses himself, Joshua and Rahab, and then many others. The Scriptures are filled with examples of those who walked by faith, not by sight.  The history of Christianity is filled with those whose faith is defined by their obedience, their trust in the provision of God.  Let me give you a brief list; I encourage you to find and read more about how they trusted, and God provided.
