mary and joseph traveling to Bethlehem

December 10 – Day 11

Luke 2:1-7

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.  While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

In Micah 2:5-7 the Lord God made a proclamation that even though this little town of Bethlehem was of no consequence that the Lord had a plan that she who is given in labor will give birth to a son and he shall be the “Ruler in Israel”.

Let’s fast forward some 750 years later and the ruler of the Roman empire issues a decree, a census to be taken and everyone was to go to their own city. Well for Joseph and Mary that city was Bethlehem the “City of David” for they were of the lineage of David.

They lived all the way up in the city of Nazareth in Galilee quite a distance for a woman about to give birth. We can only imagine their difficulties in travel.

While there she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger in a barn because there was no  room for them in the inn.

Today we can look back at our Lord and praise him for his wonderful plan that this little baby who is the son of God born on schedule in Bethlehem known as the “House of Bread” gave us the son who is “The Bread of Life”. That through him he would give his life so that we can have eternal life.

Moving toward the 25th of December as we celebrate this birth of a Savior  and in his own words in the gospel of John 3:17: For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved. Let’s praise him for always keeping his word.
