Approaching prayer

What is your approach to preparing your heart and mind for prayer, for conversation with God?  How is it that you still your mind, focus your thoughts, order your mind to approach the throne of grace?  Sometimes there isn’t time!  Sometimes we find ourselves in desperation and our approach is a simple “Oh Lord, help!”  Other times we come as simple beggars in need of grace and mercy, and like the tax collector, unable to lift our eyes to heaven.

I don’t think it is ever appropriate to only approach God with our wish list like children do with Santa at Christmas.  When we do have intercession items to bring to the Lord, these need to come as part of bringing glory to the Lord.  This is the reason I encourage you to add the phrase “so that” to your requests to guide and focus them in ways that honor, praise and glorify God as they bring about His will and purpose.  Our look Sunday at Psalm 24 is one help in directing our attention to who God is, and our place as His creation.  Remember the words of the song, “All Creatures of Our God and King” or whatever music helps you to focus and allow the distractions of the world fade as you approach Him.
