We Live Freely In A Constitutional Republic, But We Are To Follow Our King
Word-Of-The-Day: ‘(13) <Daniel said, recounting the vision in his dream,> “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. (14) He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.”’ (Daniel 7:13-14); ‘<The angel said to John, referring to the End Times,> “They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because He is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with Him will be His called, chosen and faithful followers.”’ (Revelation 17:14)
Over the last couple of years, there has been a few major stories about royal families. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britian passed away after 70 years on the throne, and her son, Charles, became King Charles III. Yesterday, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark resigned or abdicated her role, and her son became King Frederik X. While to an American the concept of royalty seems a bit antiquated there are still nations that cling to a monarchy-led government, even if the royal throne is more symbolic and not hold much power, if any.
God did not intend people to be ruled over by kings or queens, but instead His design is for Himself to rule over the nations and for people to follow His commands. Throughout early Biblical history, through Judges, nations, other than Israel, had kings. Israel was to be ruled by God, but they rejected Him repeatedly. In 1 Samuel 8 we find the Israelites clamoring to have a king, as Samuel’s attempt to have his sons rule over Israel failed as his sons were not Righteous leaders but self-serving.
God recognized this in 1 Samuel 8:7, that the people rejected Him as their king. Despite the Lord warning the Israelites (through Samuel) to ‘be careful what you ask for’ and ‘you will get the king you want and the king you deserve’, the Israelites demanded and got a king, Saul, who was eventually replaced by David. Even the lineage of David could not stop the split into two kingdoms (Israel and Judah) as the majority of tribes wanted their own king outside of the Davidic king of Judah.
History shows there have been kings, queens, Caesars, dictators, and other despotic leaders that rule by decree. The people are subjects and are at the mercy of those who rule in such fashion. The American ‘experiment’ in our Constitutional form of government was to return to the concept that the people are to follow God’s edicts, and have the freedom and rights of a citizen amongst their peers, and only subject to God with Righteousness.
While we have found that those would are not in the Faith may not believe in this concept, those of us who are Believers understand we have a King, who is Eternal and will never abdicate or grow old while on the throne. This has been God’s intention, to have His Son be our King and rule through our willing obedience of His Word and the following of His decrees, and in return we are granted by Him inalienable rights which are not to be removed or restricted by men, living in His freedom, bound only by His Word.
In Daniel 7 we find that King described, and that description matches Jesus, who has been appointed as King by God the Father to rule over all of His Creation. Though there is a battle ongoing for this throne, by Satan; we know that, per Revelation 17:14, he will be defeated by Jesus, the Lamb of God. Jesus will have with Him His Followers, His ‘bride’ are those who have accepted Him as their Savior and their Lord. His reign is for all Eternity!
While earthly rulers (who God places on their thrones or in the offices of leadership) grow old and pass away, abdicate, or get voted out of office, Jesus is forever in power, ageless, and reigns forever. He will not ever be crippled with physical ailments or be threatened by overthrow or negative opinion, as He is our Savior, and He is the one King who the other Kings will bow down to.
