We Can Amend The Constitution, But We Can Never Amend The Bible
Word-Of-The-Day: ‘Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.’ (Proverbs 19:21)
Many have good intentions, to the point where they believe they can supersede authority. Sometimes this may need to occur when man’s laws are found to be unjust. A person should always obey up to the point an order is unlawful, or a law unjust. However, the choice should not be left to a feeling, but a review whether the law is unjust against the US Constitution and laws already existing that are similar in nature can be compared with the law in question. The law in question should be first challenged in the justice system, and only after that – if it is still unjust – should it be challenged by action or ignored. The civil rights movement of the 1960s in great part was successful not because of court challenges but demonstrations that required the repudiation of unjust laws and actions to have them repealed and replaced.
The US Constitution, though inspired by the Founding Fathers through their Faith in the Lord, is not perfect as it was written and conceived of by man. Most all of the Constitution is correct and spot on, but some ambiguities, omissions, and a very few mistakes in it make it imperfect. There is a method to correct the Constitution through the amendment process, and allows the Constitution to remain static with the ability to improve upon it. It is to be the supreme law of the land and the backbone of order within the US. Any disagreements can be discussed and if necessary fixed by the amendment process.
Unfortunately, there are people who try to apply this to the Bible. A progressive mindset on the Bible finds disagreement with principles within it; it can’t be justified for people to be sent to Hell, or a loving God does not believe in consequences for sinful actions, for example. The mistake is unlike a law made by a man, which can be filled with mistakes, errors and misinformation; the Bible is God’s Word, the Word being from God who is inerrant, without blemish and perfect in its concept and application. The principles of God are perfect and thus cannot be challenged, unless they are challenged on a mistaken belief, always by a sinful nature within those who disagree with the Word.
If one ‘finds’ an error in the Bible, it is not the Bible in error but in the person who believes there is an error. God says what He means, and means what He says. There is no second-guessing and no debate. God, being the author of the Word and Jesus being the living fulfillment of the Word, cannot be perfect and Holy, and make a mistake in a Biblical principle. Since God is perfect, the Bible and its intent is perfect. There is no ‘amendment process’ for the Bible! If one disagrees with the Bible, it is something inside them that needs amended, not the Bible.
We may have feelings on how we would do things differently, but we are not God. God has His purpose and it is well addressed within His Word. We need to remember we change to follow Him; God will never change to follow us. God has never and will never change, period!
