Mary was chosen by God to bring forth a Son. Not just any Son, but the Son of God and Son of Man.
Micah was a prophet of Judah who is considered a ‘minor prophet’ as his Book is small and is seen as a complimentary writing to the more substantial Books of Isaiah and Jeremiah.
The setting is the Kingdom of Judah, approx. 730 BC, during the reign of King Ahaz. Ahaz learns that the Kings of Israel and Aram had formed an alliance to come against him and his people’s hearts “shook as the trees of the forest shake with the wind.
Isaiah was a prophet of Judah who wrote his Book in two parts; the first between 740 BC – 700 BC (Chapters 1-39) and the second between 690 BC and 675 BC (Chapters 40-66).
Isaiah 9 begins with a world in darkness. The people of Israel, broken by sin, lived under the shadow of death and judgment. But, into that darkness God spoke a promise, not of more rules or better kings, but of a child.
Genesis 3 is where the light of Advent first begins to shine. Right in the middle of the darkness created by man’s first sin.
Advent doesn’t begin in Bethlehem; its very start is at the beginning of all things.
