1 Corinthians 13

English Standard Version (ESV)

The Way of Love

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;[b] it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

The Greatest Gift

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body [a]to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not [b]puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, [c]thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is [d]perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

  1. We come to the chapter/verses read in marriage ceremonies so often that we can fall into the rap of thinking this love that Paul speaks to, is found only in marriage. Yet the context is the relationships within the church and as the guardrails for the usage of the gifts of the Spirit. All the gifts are given for the building up of the church and should be exercised in this attitude and expression of love. Should this love be seen in marriage, yes. But first and foremost it is directions and admonishment to the church for how we relate to one another.

  2. Verse 5. does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
I’m choosing the easier path again because to consider chapters 12 and 13 together as written takes me to depths of understanding I’m still trying to obtain. I do notice that prophecy is singled out. I’m certain that in modern language few know what it means here. People claiming to prophesy certainly do not seem to be delivering God’s messages. Verse 5 is from the list of what love is. These four to me are quick indicators of whether people are acting in love or not. They are so out in the open and apparent to me. I even think I can see them for what they are in myself rather easily, not always are all sins like that.
